It's Black Cat Appreciation Day - Blog Hop Around With Us!

There'd be no Black Cat Appreciation Day for me if it wasn't for my darling Tereza (left in photo) who decided to accept a sickly black cat with a broken leg. Tereza was three years old and used to getting her way because she was the only child her entire life.  What's more, I'd never had more than one cat at one time. This was entirely new territory for me.

Ateret is my first black cat.  Our meeting was purely accidental.  I was visiting a place of business when a  friend of the owner of the business ask me if I'd seen the kitten this person had in a bathroom.  I was shocked!  I wasn't told about this kitten.  I opened the bathroom door and couldn't see a thing - it was pitch black in there.  I turned on the light, and there was this little bitty kitten, squinting, eyes running, back left leg broken.  I picked her up and could see she was deathly ill.

I took this kitten, then called "Deffy," as in defying death, to  Carousel Cat Clinic of Farmington Hills, Michigan where she was quarantined for three days, then I brought her home (there was no way I was returning her to where she'd been).  She was still sick, and it took a few months to get her health stabilized.  Tereza was irate. She accepted her after several days.  I think she knew her new friend, a toy she never requested, was sick and she needed a friend.  It turned into an affectionate friendship.  They were devoted to each other.

The photo you see above was taken the day before Ateret's surgery.   Tereza died suddenly five months later.  She was only four years old. I walked in the house after work and found Tereza dead in her bed, Ateret shaking and crying in my bedroom.  Ateret hasn't been the same since.

The photo above is my second reason for celebrating Black Cat Appreciation Day, my darling Livia Amie Kitten.  I've known her since she was a week old.  I helped raise her brother and two sisters.  She'd chosen me before I ever knew I'd be her Mama.  I adopted Livia, then called Matilda, because Ateret can't handle being alone.  She came home two weeks after Tereza died.  It took a week or two for them to work things out.  Sweet Livia has lived up to her middle name.  Ateret doesn't have anything close to the relationship she had with Tereza with Livia, and certainly not with Abbi.

I love my black cats, and now you know Ateret's story!

  1. Did you mean to close the bloghop at 3 am on Aug. 17 or Aug. 18? I came last night (Aug. 16 into 17), and the code wasn't here yet. Now, it's 6:30ish CDT and the Blog Hop is closed.

I posted the code anyway and I hope that you'll reopen the blog hop to last all day today because I really want to join in appreciating black cats with a big group!

    1. Thank you, Chloe, Twiggy and Onyx and Blog Paws for helping make my idea into a reality. Ateret enjoyed being the baby. She never wanted to be the big girl. I feel bad I wasn't able to keep my first promise I made to her when I told her I'd never let anything bad happen to her again. All our cats are lucky!
